Saleem Shehzad: Soaring spirit of Pakistan
By Anis Shakur
Mohabbat kay diye jala lo, wafa kay geet gunguna lo, taqaza hai ye zindigi
ka
Mohabbat kay diye jala lo
Rang roop husn ka nikhartay huay waqt apna pyar mein guzartay huay
Zindigi ki chahat o khuloos say ubhartay huay
Her ik dil mein jaga bana lo, wafa kay geet gunguna lo, taqaza hai ye zindigi ka
Jis jaga burai ho hamara wo maqaam he naheen, jo ruthay hain unhain mana lo
Wafa kay geet gunguna lo, taqaza hai ye zindigi ka, mohabbat kay diye jala lo
I always prefer to believe the best of everybody it saves so much trouble.
The above statement holds true to the popular singer of the yesteryear, Saleem
Shehzad. He was born and raised in Ajmer Sharif, India. His father, Mohammed Azeem Prem Ragi, was a reputed poet and singer
of the time.
Saleem Shehzad took music lessons from renowned music composer, Ustaad Baray Ghulam Ali. Saleem seemed to incorporate the
basics of music and musical instruments rapidly.
After partition, Saleem migrated to Karachi, Pakistan. In due course of time, Saleem successfully graduated from college and
enhanced his music abilities as well.
Saleem provided countless hours of pleasure to innumerable loyal fans through songs like the one below:
‘Mujhay ik larki say pyar ho gaya, khali pele kehta hai pyar ho gaya, jisay deikho pyar ka bemaar hogaya.’ The
film ‘Heera aur pathar,’ composer, Sohail Rana. It looks like that was the mood of the moment.
Those were the days of stiff competition as Saleem forged his way up. Below is a song with positive, uplifting and truthful
lyrics:
‘Mohabbat kay diye jala lo.’ The 1969 film ‘Assalam o alaikum.’
Saleem’s performance shows an artist’s understanding. In fact, I would say, that is the secret of his success.
Saleem lent his voice to the romantic number below:
‘Zindigi to Aap ki ra’ana yeon ka naam hai, Aap he say hai seher aur Aap he say shaam hai.’ Composer, Sohail
Rana, the film ‘Saughat,’ December 1, 1970.
One of Pakistan’s most inventive artists, Saleem’s plus points includes flexibility, rooted in love and understanding.
Saleem’s singing talents and Nisar Bazmi’s fabulous music did the magic in the song below:
‘Pyar ki yaad nigahoan mein sajaye rakhna, in chiraghoan ko hawaon mein jalaye rakhna.’ Music, Nisar Bazmi, the
film ‘Talaash,’ January 23, 1976.
Saleem Shehzad is no longer at the forefront of Pakistani show business. He
will continue to provide perspective and delight to posterity. The End
